How fast do airliners fly? Cruise speed, Mach and more

When the seatback screen shows a ground speed of 1,000 km/h, it feels fast. Yet a 450 km hop from Seoul Gimpo to Jeju still takes over an hour. So how fast do airliners really go, and why do short flights feel so slow?
Cruise speed is roughly 850–900 km/h
Modern airliners cruising at around 10 to 12 km usually fly at about 850 to 900 km/h, roughly three times the speed of a high-speed train. It varies by type: smaller short-haul jets are a little slower, and large long-haul jets a little faster.
Pilots talk in Mach
Up high, speed is managed as a Mach number, a fraction of the speed of sound. Mach 0.85 means 85% of the speed of sound. The speed of sound depends on temperature: a little over 1,200 km/h at ground level, but around 1,060 km/h in the cold air at cruising altitude.
Airliners stay in the Mach 0.8s because, beyond that, the airflow over the wing approaches the speed of sound and drag rises sharply. Many flights also cruise slightly slower than they could to save fuel.
Airspeed and ground speed are not the same
Airspeed is how fast the plane moves through the air. Ground speed is how fast it actually passes over the ground. Because the air itself moves as wind, the two differ: a tailwind makes ground speed higher than airspeed, and a headwind makes it lower.
Riding a strong winter jet stream, a plane's ground speed can top 1,200 km/h. It is passing over the ground faster than sound would, but relative to the air it is flying at its normal speed, so it is not supersonic. The note on why flying east is faster covers this in more detail.
Take-off and landing are much slower
Take-off and landing happen at far lower speeds than cruise, depending on type and weight. Speeds are also capped at low altitude: in the US, for example, the limit below 10,000 feet (about 3 km) is 250 knots (about 460 km/h), so climbs and descents are flown well below cruise speed. Add taxiing to and from the runway and any holding near the airport, and it all adds up.
Short flights have low average speeds
Take-off, climb, descent and landing take about the same time whatever the route length. So the shorter the flight, the bigger their share, and the lower the overall average speed.
| Route | Distance | Estimated time | Average speed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seoul Gimpo → Jeju | 451 km | 1 h 15 min | about 360 km/h |
| Seoul Incheon → Tokyo Narita | 1,257 km | 2 h 10 min | about 580 km/h |
| Seoul Incheon → Bangkok | 3,669 km | 5 h 25 min | about 680 km/h |
| Seoul Incheon → New York JFK | 11,089 km | 14 h 20 min | about 770 km/h |
What happened to Concorde?
Concorde was a supersonic airliner that cruised at around Mach 2, over 2,000 km/h, crossing the Atlantic in under four hours. But it was costly to operate and carried only about 100 passengers, so tickets were very expensive, and its sonic boom kept it from flying supersonic over land in many places. It was retired in 2003.
Efforts to build quieter supersonic aircraft have continued since, but no supersonic airliner has yet returned to scheduled service.
How the calculator works it out
Flight Time takes the shortest (great-circle) distance between two airports, divides it by 800 km/h and adds 40 minutes for take-off, climb, approach and landing. The 800 km/h is an average set a little below cruise speed. It adds up to 40 km/h for eastbound flights and takes the same off westbound ones, then rounds to the nearest 5 minutes. The map draws a ring for each hour of flying from your departure airport, so you can see at a glance how far a few hours will take you.
