Body fat from a tape measure: how the U.S. Navy formula works

If you want to know your body fat percentage but have no body composition scale, a tape measure can give you an estimate. The best-known method is the circumference formula published in 1984 by Hodgdon and Beckett of the U.S. Naval Health Research Center, in separate reports for men and women. It needs only your neck and waist (plus hips for women) and your height, so many body fat calculators still use it. Here is what the formula looks at, how to measure so the number wobbles less, and how to read the result.
What the formula looks at: waist minus neck
The formula looks like this (all lengths in cm).
- Men: 495 ÷ (1.0324 − 0.19077 × log10(waist − neck) + 0.15456 × log10(height)) − 450
- Women: 495 ÷ (1.29579 − 0.35004 × log10(waist + hip − neck) + 0.22100 × log10(height)) − 450
It looks complicated, but the idea is simple. The waist grows a lot as fat builds up, while the neck changes relatively little and works as a reference for frame size. So the bigger the waist (or waist plus hips) minus the neck, the higher the body fat. Height adjusts for the fact that the same circumference means less on a taller body.
The formula is a statistical fit that matches circumferences and height to body fat measured more precisely. Because of the logarithms, each extra centimeter matters a little less as the difference grows. The 495 at the front and the 450 at the end come from the equation that turns estimated body density into body fat percentage.
How to measure well
Most of the error comes from the tape, not the formula. Measuring like this keeps the number steadier.
- Neck: just below the Adam's apple, with the tape sloping slightly down at the front.
- Waist: at the navel for men, at the narrowest point for women, after a relaxed breath out and without pulling the stomach in.
- Hips (women): at the widest point of the buttocks, level with the floor.
- Always: tape on bare skin, snug but not pressing in. Measure two or three times and average, and next time keep the same time of day (for example, morning before eating) and the same spots.
Worked examples
For a man 175 cm tall with a 38 cm neck and an 85 cm waist, waist − neck = 47 cm goes into the formula. The result is about 16.9%. At 72 kg that is about 12.2 kg of fat and about 59.8 kg of fat-free mass. On the American Council on Exercise (ACE) chart, that falls in the men's 14–17% "fitness" band.
For a woman 162 cm tall with a 32 cm neck, a 70 cm waist and 95 cm hips, waist + hip − neck = 133 cm goes in. The result is about 25.7%, or about 14.4 kg of fat at 56 kg. On the ACE chart that is the women's 25–31% "average" band.
What 1 cm changes
We used the man above to see how much the result moves when one measurement is 1 cm off.
| Waist | 83 cm | 84 cm | 85 cm | 86 cm | 87 cm |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Body fat | 15.4% | 16.2% | 16.9% | 17.7% | 18.5% |
Here each centimeter of waist moves the result by about 0.8 percentage points. Put the tape a little above the navel or measure mid-breath and 2 cm is easy to lose, so the result can swing by more than 1.5 points. For the woman, 1 cm of waist or hip moved it by about 0.5 points. That is why tracking whether the number goes up or down, measured the same way each time, is far more useful than any single reading.
Why body fat scales give different numbers
Most gym and home body fat scales use bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). They pass a weak current through the body, measure the resistance, and estimate body fat from that plus height and weight. Resistance depends on body water, so the result shifts with how much you drank, whether you just ate or exercised, and body temperature. BIA too is considered better for tracking changes in one person than for a single accurate reading.
The tape formula and BIA measure different things under different assumptions, so even on the same day they can differ by several points. Neither is simply wrong; they have different baselines. Research uses precise methods such as DEXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) or a four-compartment model as the reference. Whatever you use, pick one method and only compare its numbers with each other.
When it may not fit well
- The formula was built from U.S. military adults, so it can be off by a few points for people with different body types.
- It is best not used for growing children and teenagers, or during pregnancy, when the waist changes a lot.
- Waist size reflects not only fat but also abdominal muscle, food and gas. Measuring right after a meal tends to read high.
This note is general information, not medical advice. If you are concerned about your weight or body fat, talk to a doctor.
Summary
The U.S. Navy formula estimates body fat from the difference between waist and neck. Moving the tape by 1 cm can change the result by close to a percentage point, so measure at the same spots and time and watch the trend rather than the number. It is normal for a body fat scale to give a different figure.
