Why the time difference with the US and Europe changes

Last summer, calling a friend in London meant an 8-hour time difference. In winter it is 9 hours. Your friend did not move, but the gap changed. That is daylight saving time.

What daylight saving time is

Daylight saving time (DST) means setting clocks one hour ahead in summer. With the clock moved forward, people who get up at the same clock time are really getting up an hour earlier, so they get more daylight in the evening. Saving energy on lighting was the original idea.

Korea does not use daylight saving time today. The last time was 1987–1988, around the Seoul Olympics. Japan and China do not use it either, so time differences within East Asia stay the same all year.

Each region switches on different dates

Even the places that use it do not agree on dates. The main ones:

RegionStartsEnds
Most of the US and CanadaSecond Sunday of MarchFirst Sunday of November
European Union, UKLast Sunday of MarchLast Sunday of October
South-east Australia (Sydney, Melbourne)First Sunday of OctoberFirst Sunday of April
Some places inside these countries do not use it, such as most of Arizona and Hawaii in the US, and Queensland (Brisbane) in Australia.

Australia is in the southern hemisphere, so its seasons are reversed and it starts daylight saving in Korea's autumn. The gap between Korea and Sydney actually grows during Korea's winter.

New York14 hours behind13 hours behind
London9 hours behind8 hours behind

The confusing few weeks

Because the US and Europe switch on different dates, there are stretches in spring and autumn when only one side has changed. From the last Sunday of October to the first Sunday of November, about a week, only Europe has left daylight saving. London is then 9 hours behind Korea while New York is still 13 hours behind, so London and New York are only 4 hours apart instead of the usual 5. In March, the US switches two to three weeks before Europe in the same way.

When booking an overseas meeting or video call during these weeks, using the "usual" gap can put you an hour off. Use the time zone setting in your calendar, or check the gap again for that exact date.

What happens on the switch days

On the day daylight saving starts, 2 a.m. jumps to 3 a.m. and the day has 23 hours. On the day it ends, the 1 a.m. hour happens twice and the day has 25 hours. Take care with flights and night trains that leave or arrive in the early hours of those days. Times on a ticket are always local to that airport.

Most phones change automatically, but older watches and car clocks need changing by hand. If you are travelling, check that your plans for that morning have not shifted an hour.

Will daylight saving last?

Opinions differ on whether daylight saving really saves energy, and on whether changing the clocks harms health. The European Union and the United States have both discussed ending it or fixing the clock all year round, but nothing has changed yet. Rules may change in future, so check important dates as they come up.

Check today's time difference

Flight Time calculates the time difference for today's date, so if daylight saving is in effect, the gap it shows already includes it.
