EMOM, AMRAP,
EMOM, AMRAP and circuit training: home workout formats explained
Every Minute On the Minute의 줄임말이에요.
AMRAP은 As Many Rounds (또는 Reps) As Possible의 줄임말이에요.

Home workout videos are full of labels like “10-minute EMOM”, “12-minute AMRAP” and “full-body circuit”. They sound technical, but they are just names for ways of fitting exercise into time. The moves can be exactly the same; what changes is how the clock is used. Once you know the terms, a few squats and push-ups are enough to try all three.
EMOM: start again every minute
EMOM stands for Every Minute On the Minute. At the top of each minute you do a set number of reps, then rest for whatever is left of that minute. If 12 squats take you 40 seconds, you rest for 20, and when the next minute starts you do 12 more.
The faster you finish, the longer you rest; as you tire, the rest shrinks. Because the clock sets the pace, it is hard to drift off when training alone.
AMRAP: as much as you can in a fixed time
AMRAP stands for As Many Rounds (or Reps) As Possible. You group a few moves into one round and repeat that round as many times as you can before the time runs out. There is no set rest; you pause when you need to.
At the end you have a score, such as “four rounds plus six squats”. Repeat the same workout later and compare scores to see whether your fitness has improved.
Circuit training: one move after another
Circuit training means doing several exercises in a fixed order with only short breaks between them. It is usually traced back to Britain in the 1950s. Each station can be a number of reps, but home workouts today often use time instead, such as 40 seconds on and 20 seconds off. After one lap you rest a little longer and repeat for two or three laps. A timed circuit works much like interval formats such as Tabata.
Side by side
| Format | What is fixed | Rest | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| EMOM | Reps each minute | Whatever is left | Holding a steady pace |
| AMRAP | Total time | Your choice | Tracking a score over time |
| Circuit | Order and time per move | Short, between moves | Working the whole body evenly |
Bodyweight examples to try
- 10-minute EMOM: 12 squats on odd minutes, 8 push-ups on even minutes. Drop to your knees for the push-ups if you need to.
- 12-minute AMRAP: 10 squats, 6 lunges each leg, 6 knee push-ups and a 20-second plank make one round. Repeat for 12 minutes.
- Full-body circuit: squats, push-ups, lunges, plank and fast marching on the spot, 40 seconds each with 20 seconds’ rest between moves. Rest a minute after each lap and do three laps, about 16 minutes in all.
Picking the right intensity as a beginner
In an EMOM, leave time to rest. Aim for a rep count you can finish in 30 to 40 seconds, so you get at least 20 seconds off. If you start running out of minute, cut a rep or two.
In an AMRAP, pick a pace you can hold. Going all out from the start usually burns you out within minutes. Start at a pace where you are breathing hard but can still say a short sentence, and pause when your form slips.
Keep it short at first. Six to ten minutes is plenty to begin with. Add time or rounds gradually as it gets easier. Good form matters more than the numbers.
Warm up and know when to stop
Spend about five minutes warming up first with marching on the spot, arm circles and a few easy squats. Afterwards, walk slowly until your breathing settles and do some light stretching. Stop straight away if you feel joint pain, chest pain or marked dizziness. If you have a health condition or have not exercised for a long time, check with a doctor before you start.
Try it with Round
Round is an interval timer: you set work and rest times plus the number of rounds and sets, and it signals each change with a beep. Here is how it fits each format.
- EMOM: set work to 1 minute, rest to 0 seconds and rounds to 10. A signal sounds at the start of every minute, with short beeps in the last three seconds. You count the reps yourself.
- AMRAP: set work to 12 minutes and rounds to 1 for a single 12-minute countdown. The timer does not count your rounds, so keep track of them yourself.
- Circuit: the example above is 40 seconds work, 20 seconds rest, 5 rounds, 3 sets and 1 minute between sets. There is also a built-in “circuit” preset (1 min / 15 s × 6 × 3 sets).
Turn on voice and it reads out “work” and “rest” (in Korean), and on supported devices it vibrates too.
