Why flights from Seoul to Europe take longer than the math says

Enter Seoul Incheon to Paris in a flight time calculator and you get about 12 hours 10 minutes. That is the shortest path between the two airports, the great-circle distance of about 8,930 km, divided by a typical cruising speed.

Search for real tickets, though, and many schedules are an hour or two longer. The math is fine. The plane often just cannot fly that shortest path.

The shortest path crosses Siberia

On a round Earth, the shortest line from Seoul to Europe bends far north and passes over Siberia in Russia. Many flights used to take it.

Since 2022, many airlines have switched to routes that avoid Russian airspace, going south over China and Central Asia or taking other detours. A longer path means a longer flight. Each airline's situation differs, so two flights to the same city on the same day can take noticeably different times.

The sky has roads too

Even without detours, planes do not fly the straight line on the map. They follow set airways, use fixed procedures to climb out and approach airports, and shift their paths for weather, wind and spacing from other aircraft.

Airspace is divided into regions run by each country, and a flight is handed from one controller to the next as it crosses borders. When an area closes, such as a conflict zone or a military exercise area, traffic squeezes onto the airways around it, and the paths get longer and busier.

A detour costs more than time

A longer route changes more than the flight time. The plane has to carry more fuel, and heavier fuel can mean fewer passengers or less cargo. Longer flights also change how much rest pilots and cabin crew need, so some flights carry an extra relief crew.

Schedules shift too. If arrival in Europe gets later, airlines may move departure times to fit the hours the destination airport allows. That is why the same route often leaves and lands at different times than it did a few years ago.

The trip home is a little better

Flying from Europe back to Seoul heads east, so it gets help from the westerly jet stream high up. Even on the same detour, the return trip is often shorter than the outbound one. There is more on how wind changes flight time in why flying east is faster.

What to check when booking

When comparing tickets to Europe, look at the total flight time as well as the price. Routes differ by airline, so two direct flights to the same city on the same day can differ by more than an hour. For connecting flights, add up both legs and the layover to see the real total.

Leave some slack in your plans for the day you land. Arrivals often come later than the estimate, and Europe is 7 to 8 hours behind Korea, so the first day tends to be tiring.

How to read the estimate

The calculator tells you the time for the shortest path with nothing in the way. Use it to get a feel for a trip, and check exact departure and arrival times when you book. For Europe in particular, expect real schedules to run longer than the estimate.
