Long-haul flights: how to make 10+ hours easier

From Seoul, a direct flight to Europe or the US East Coast takes roughly 12 to 14 hours. That is a long time to fill with films, and by landing your legs are puffy, your throat is dry and your head feels foggy. You do not need much to fix it. The right seat, enough water and a few stretches can change how you feel when you arrive.

Pick a seat for what you plan to do

The best long-haul seat depends on you. Decide how you want to spend the flight first, and the choice gets easier.

  • Aisle: easy to get up, walk around or reach the toilet. But you move whenever your neighbours need out, and trolleys and passers-by can bump you.
  • Window: a wall to lean on and nobody to wake you. But getting up means disturbing others, so you tend to move less.
  • Exit row: usually more legroom, but you must be able to help the crew in an emergency, and there are conditions such as age. Armrests are often fixed, you usually cannot keep a bag at your feet for take-off and landing, and some airlines charge extra.

Many travellers find seats over the wing less bumpy, while seats right next to toilets or galleys can be hard to sleep in because of foot traffic and light.

Cabin air is drier than you think

At cruise, cabin humidity is usually somewhere around 10 to 20 percent, about as dry as a desert. That is why your eyes feel gritty and your lips and throat dry out. Sip water little and often before you feel thirsty, and go easy on alcohol and caffeine. Glasses instead of contact lenses, lip balm, a small moisturiser and eye drops all help.

Why your legs swell

Sitting still in a cramped seat for hours slows blood flow in your legs, so they swell. Rarely, a clot can form in a deep vein of the leg, and the risk is known to rise slightly on flights longer than about four hours. For healthy people the risk is low, but these habits help with both swelling and risk:

  1. Get up and walk the aisle every hour or two.
  2. While seated, circle your ankles and lift your toes and heels often.
  3. Wear loose clothes and do not pile bags around your feet.
  4. Avoid sleeping for hours without moving after sleeping pills or alcohol.

If you have had recent surgery or a past clot, are pregnant, or take hormone medication, talk to a doctor before you fly, and ask whether compression stockings make sense for you.

To sleep, block light and noise

Poor sleep on board usually comes down to light, noise and an unsupported neck. An eye mask, earplugs or noise-cancelling headphones and a neck pillow make a big difference. Engine noise is louder than it seems, so try not to keep turning the volume up for hours. Time your sleep to your destination; there is more on that in the jet lag note.

When your ears hurt

The cabin is pressurised to roughly what you would feel at 1,800 to 2,400 metres above sea level. On descent, pressure rises quickly and your ears can feel blocked or sore. Swallowing, yawning, chewing gum and sipping water all help. You can also pinch your nose, close your mouth and push gently, but never hard. Babies and toddlers are more prone to it because the tubes in their ears are smaller. If you have a bad cold or blocked nose, ask a doctor or pharmacist before flying.
