Where the 1 in 8,145,060 lotto odds come from

You have probably heard that the jackpot odds in Korea's Lotto 6/45 are 1 in 8,145,060. Fewer people know where that number comes from, or what the odds are for second or fifth prize. This note explains how the odds are calculated. It does not encourage buying tickets or offer any way to improve your chances.

The rules of Lotto 6/45

According to Wikipedia, you choose 6 numbers from 1 to 45, and one game costs 1,000 won. Each draw picks 7 numbers: 6 winning numbers and 1 bonus number. The bonus number does not count toward your matches; it only separates second from third prize when you match five. The order of the numbers does not matter.

Jackpot odds: ways to choose 6 from 45

First prize needs all 6 of your numbers to match the 6 winning numbers. So you count how many ways there are to choose 6 numbers from 45 without regard to order. This is a combination, written 45C6.

Count with order first: 45 choices for the first number, 44 for the second, and so on to the sixth, giving 45 × 44 × 43 × 42 × 41 × 40 = 5,864,443,200. Lotto ignores order, so divide by the number of ways to arrange the same six numbers, 6 × 5 × 4 × 3 × 2 × 1 = 720.

5,864,443,200 ÷ 720 = 8,145,060. There are 8,145,060 possible combinations and exactly one wins first prize, so the jackpot odds per game are 1 in 8,145,060, whichever numbers you choose.

Second to fifth prize

The other tiers work the same way. Split the 45 numbers into the 6 winning numbers, the bonus number and the other 38.

  • 2nd (5 + bonus): exactly one winning number is missing and the bonus number takes its place. There are 6 ways to choose the missing number, so 6 combinations.
  • 3rd (5 match): 6 ways to choose five winning numbers, and the last number is one of the 38 not drawn at all, so 6 × 38 = 228.
  • 4th (4 match): 4 of the 6 winning numbers (15 ways) and 2 of the other 39 (741 ways), so 15 × 741 = 11,115.
  • 5th (3 match): 3 of the winning numbers (20 ways) and 3 of the other 39 (9,139 ways), so 20 × 9,139 = 182,780.

How small is 1 in 8 million?

The number is too big to picture easily. Imagine balls numbered 1 to 8,145,060; first prize means picking one particular ball in a single try. Playing one game a week is 52 games a year, so on average it would take more than 150,000 years to come across the winning combination once (8,145,060 ÷ 52 ≈ 156,636 years). And since every draw is independent, that does not mean it is guaranteed to happen eventually.

The idea of expected value

A concept often used alongside probability is expected value: multiply each outcome's amount by its probability and add them up. It means the average amount per try if you repeated the same thing a very large number of times.

In Lotto 6/45, fourth prize is a fixed 50,000 won and fifth prize a fixed 5,000 won. For just these two tiers, fifth contributes 5,000 × 182,780/8,145,060 ≈ 112 won and fourth 50,000 × 11,115/8,145,060 ≈ 68 won, about 180 won per game. First to third prizes are shared out based on each draw's sales and number of winners, so their amounts change every time and cannot be fixed in advance.

The overall structure still tells you something. According to a 2012 article cited on Korean Wikipedia, 500 won of each 1,000-won game goes to prize money and the rest to the lottery fund, commissions and other costs. With about half of sales returned as prizes, the expected value of one game, averaged over many players and draws, is below its price. That is by design, since the lottery is set up to fund public programs. This is not a judgment either way, just the structure as probability and expected value describe it.

Can past numbers predict the next draw?

No. Each draw happens fresh, with no connection to earlier draws, and the balls have no memory. Numbers that came up often recently and numbers that have not appeared for a long time have exactly the same chance next time. Feeling that a number is "due" is a well-known mistake called the gambler's fallacy.

A patterned set like 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 has the same 1 in 8,145,060 chance as any other. Random picks and hand-picked numbers have the same odds, and analyses or methods that claim to raise your chances have no mathematical basis.

Pick's lotto number generator

The lotto page in Pick (골라줘) is a just-for-fun tool that draws 6 different numbers from 1 to 45 evenly. It uses the browser's cryptographic random numbers (crypto.getRandomValues) and the Fisher–Yates method so no number comes up more often than another. It cannot change the odds, though: every set of numbers has the same 1 in 8,145,060 chance of first prize.
