Counting down to home time, and turning a monthly salary into an hourly rate

Around three in the afternoon, almost everyone does the sum: how long until I can go home? Subtracting the current time from home time sounds simple, but once lunch is in the middle, “time left” and “work time left” are no longer the same. And if you also wonder how much you've earned so far today, you need to turn a monthly salary into an hourly rate. Here are the two calculations behind Offwork.

Time left is not work time left

Take a job that starts at 9:00, ends at 18:00 and has lunch from 12:00 to 13:00. From arrival to home time is 9 hours, but the hour of lunch isn't work, so the actual working time is 8 hours.

At 10:30, there are 7 hours 30 minutes until home time, but lunch is still ahead, so only 6 hours 30 minutes of work are left. At 15:00, after lunch, both are 3 hours. That's why Offwork shows two things. The big number is the time until the next event (lunch, end of lunch, home time), and “worked today” below it is the actual working time with lunch taken out.

How the gauge is worked out

Offwork turns every time into “seconds since the workday started”. Start is 0, lunch begins at 3 hours (10,800 seconds), lunch ends at 4 hours and home time is at 9 hours. Knowing how many seconds have passed is then enough to tell whether it's morning, lunch or afternoon, and how long until the next event.

How full the gauge is equals time since start ÷ time from start to finish. The gauge keeps filling during lunch, while “worked today” skips the lunch period. Measuring everything from the start time also means a night shift that begins at 22:00 and ends the next morning works the same way.

15:003:00:00 until home time66%5h
17:500:10:00 until home time98%7h 50m
For a 9:00 start, lunch from 12:00 to 13:00 and an 18:00 finish. Gauge percentages are rounded down.

Why Korea divides a monthly salary by 209

In Korea, a monthly salary is usually turned into an hourly rate by dividing it by 209. With about 22 working days a month you might expect 8 hours × 22 days = 176 hours. So why 209?

The answer is paid weekly leave. Under Korean labour law, someone who works at least 15 hours a week and completes their scheduled days earns one paid day off per week. With a 40-hour week, that day adds 8 paid hours, so 48 hours a week are paid.

The average number of weeks in a month is 365 days ÷ 7 ÷ 12, about 4.345. Multiply by 48 hours and you get about 208.6, which rounds to 209. The same 209 hours is used when the government states the minimum wage as a monthly amount: the 2026 minimum wage of 10,320 won an hour × 209 gives 2,156,880 won a month.

Based on a 40-hour week (8 hours a day, 5 days a week).

For example, a pre-tax salary of 3,000,000 won a month gives 3,000,000 ÷ 209 ≈ 14,354 won an hour. Having worked 5 hours by 15:00, as in the example above, you have earned about 71,770 won today.

Things to keep in mind

209 hours assumes a 40-hour week with paid weekly leave included in the salary. If your hours are different, or your pay includes items such as overtime or meal allowances, your real ordinary hourly wage may differ. For an annual salary, divide by 12 first. When you need an exact figure, go by your employment contract or payslip.

Trying it in Offwork

Enter your start, lunch and finishing times and your work days, and the gauge and countdown start moving. Enter your pre-tax monthly salary in units of 10,000 won and it also shows what you've earned today: the hourly rate (salary ÷ 209) times the hours worked so far. The rate always uses 209 hours even if you set different hours, so treat it as a guide. You can get alerts at lunch and home time, and optionally 5, 10 or 30 minutes before. Everything you enter is saved only in your browser. The interface is in Korean.
