JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC
JPG, PNG, WebP and HEIC: what's the difference?
|---|---|---|---|
| JPG (JPEG) |
| HEIC (HEIF) |

You go to upload a photo and the form says "JPG only," or you open an iPhone photo on a work computer and it will not open because it is HEIC. Image formats differ in more than name: they reduce data differently, handle transparency differently and open in different places. Once you know the differences, picking the right one is quick.
Two ideas first: lossy and lossless
Almost every image file is compressed, in one of two ways.
- Lossless: nothing is thrown away; repeated data is just written more compactly. The file opens identical to the original down to each pixel, but complex images like photos stay large.
- Lossy: fine changes the eye barely notices are discarded, so the file gets much smaller. The more you discard, the smaller it gets, but go too far and you see blotches and blocky edges. Discarded data never comes back.
The four formats at a glance
| Format | Compression | Transparency | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| JPG (JPEG) | Lossy | No | Photos that must open anywhere |
| PNG | Lossless | Yes | Screenshots, text, charts, logos |
| WebP | Lossy or lossless | Yes | Images on websites |
| HEIC (HEIF) | Lossy | Possible in the format | Shooting and storing on iPhone |
JPG: the default for photos
JPG is the most widely used photo format today. It splits the image into 8×8 pixel blocks and discards fine detail inside each block in ways that are hard to see, so it stores smooth gradients like skies and skin very efficiently. Sharp edges such as text and lines can look smeared, though. It cannot store transparency, so converting a transparent PNG to JPG fills those areas with a background color such as white.
PNG: when it must stay sharp
PNG is lossless, so it keeps screenshots, tables, charts and logos with lots of lines and text perfectly clean. It supports transparency, which makes it common for logos and icons without a background. Saving a photo as PNG makes the file much larger than JPG, though. And converting a JPG to PNG does not improve quality: the detail lost when it was saved as JPG does not return, and the file just grows.
WebP: smaller for the web
WebP is a web format from Google that supports lossy and lossless compression and transparency. According to Google, lossy WebP files are 25–34% smaller than JPGs at equivalent quality, and lossless WebP files are 26% smaller than PNGs. All major browsers support it, so it works well on websites, but older programs and some upload systems may not accept it. A newer format, AVIF, fills a similar role with even better compression, though it is still recommended to provide a fallback for places that do not support it.
HEIC: the iPhone's format
HEIC is a photo compressed with HEVC and stored in the HEIF container. Apple made it the iPhone's default photo format with iOS 11 in 2017, and it is commonly cited as about half the size of a JPG of similar quality. That saves storage, but Windows needs an extra extension to open it, and many websites do not accept HEIC uploads.
On iPhone, choosing "Most Compatible" under Settings › Camera › Formats makes the camera shoot JPG from the start. When sharing from the Photos app, you can also set the file format under Options to "Most Compatible," and Apple says files may then be converted to JPEG.
Which to pick
- Sending a photo by email or an upload form: JPG is the safe choice; it opens almost everywhere.
- Screenshots, tables or charts in documents: PNG keeps text crisp.
- Logos or stickers with a transparent background: use PNG or WebP. JPG cannot hold transparency.
- Images for a blog or your own site: WebP cuts file size so pages load faster.
- Keeping iPhone photos: leave them as HEIC to save space and convert to JPG only when sending.
One thing to remember when converting: every conversion or re-save between lossy formats loses a little more quality, so keep the original and make the format you need in one step.
Convert a format now
The converter in Photo Fix switches between JPG, PNG and WebP. Your photos are never uploaded; everything runs in your browser. HEIC opens only if your device can read it.
