How to shrink a photo's file size without visible quality loss

You try to upload an ID photo to a job application and hit a "500 KB max" limit, or attach a few photos to an email and go over the size cap. Phone photos are several megabytes each. But for photos meant to be viewed on screen, you can cut the size dramatically without any visible difference. Once you know what sets file size, it is clear where to start.

Two things set the size

A photo's file size depends mostly on two things. One is the pixel count: how many pixels wide and tall it is. The other is the compression quality: how much detail is discarded when it is saved as JPG or WebP. The content matters too. A photo full of fine texture, like leaves or gravel, is larger than a clear sky at the same settings.

Pixel count: the biggest lever

An uncompressed image usually takes 4 bytes per pixel (red, green, blue and transparency). A 4000×3000 photo has 12 million pixels, about 48 MB before compression. JPG compression brings the real file down to a few megabytes, but more pixels still mean a bigger file.

The key point is that halving the width also halves the height, leaving a quarter of the pixels. That is why reducing pixel count shrinks a file far more effectively than lowering quality.

Long side (4:3 photo)PixelsOf originalGood for
4000 px12 million100%Phone original, printing
1920 pxabout 2.76 millionabout 23%Viewing on laptops and phones
1280 pxabout 1.23 millionabout 10%Forum attachments, messengers, documents
1080 pxabout 0.87 millionabout 7%Profile pictures, small attachments
File size is not exactly proportional to pixel count, but it tends to drop sharply as pixels go down.

For photos viewed on phones and laptops, 1920 px on the long side is plenty sharp. Avoid enlarging beyond the original size: no new detail appears, so it just looks blurry.

Compression quality: why 70 to 85 usually works

The quality setting for JPG and WebP is usually a number from 1 to 100 that controls how much detail is discarded. Dropping from 100 to about 90 already saves a lot of space with almost no visible change. The 70–85 range is popular because most photos look nearly identical to the original on screen there while the file gets much smaller. Below 70, blotches and blocky edges start to show in smooth areas like skies and skin, because JPG compresses the image in 8×8 blocks.

These numbers are not absolute, though. web.dev notes that quality settings work differently inside each format and encoder, so the same number gives different results, and it recommends experimenting with a few values. A quality of 90 in JPG and in WebP are not the same. The surest check is to put the result next to the original and zoom in.

PNG has no quality setting

PNG is lossless, so there is no quality slider. If a photo is saved as PNG, reducing its size or converting it to JPG or WebP makes the biggest difference. Screenshots and images with lots of text, on the other hand, stay crisper as PNG with only the pixel count reduced.

Each re-save costs a little

Lossy compression discards a little detail every time it saves. Opening, shrinking and re-saving the same photo again and again lowers quality each time, so keep the original and make the size and quality you need in one step. A photo that is already heavily compressed may barely shrink, or may even grow, when compressed again.

Steps for meeting an upload limit

  1. Check the format first. If it says "JPG only," convert to JPG.
  2. Reduce the pixel count. Start at about 1280 px on the long side. If exact dimensions are required, crop to that ratio first, then resize to the exact size.
  3. Save at a quality around 80. Documents and ID photos usually come in under a few hundred KB at this step.
  4. Still too big? Lower the width one more step, to 1080 px or 800 px. The result is cleaner than pushing quality below 60.

When you shrink a photo in Photo Fix, metadata such as the shooting location is dropped too, saving a few more kilobytes. A bonus: you do not need to remove the location separately.

Shrink a photo now

The compressor in Photo Fix lets you pick a quality and a maximum width, shrink several photos at once and compare each with its original. If you need exact pixel dimensions, use Resize. Your photos are never uploaded.
