Location data in photos, and how to remove it before posting

A photo of something you are selling, taken at home for a secondhand marketplace, or a picture of your child posted on a blog, can carry information you cannot see: when it was taken, on what device, and, if location services were on, the coordinates of where it was taken. This information is called EXIF.

What EXIF holds

EXIF is a standard for storing shooting information inside digital camera photos, maintained by the Camera & Imaging Products Association (CIPA). Most phone photos store their information this way too.

DataExampleWhat it can reveal
Location (GPS)Latitude, longitude, altitudeWhere it was taken, your home or office
Date and timeWhen it was takenWhen you were there, your routine
DeviceMake, model, lensWhich phone you use
Camera settingsShutter speed, aperture, ISOUsually nothing sensitive
OrientationWhich way is upNeeded to display the photo upright
Location is recorded when your phone's location services are on and the camera app is allowed to use them.

Apple's user guide notes that when you share a photo or video, related metadata such as date and time, location, device and captions is shared too. The web performance guide web.dev also points out that images often carry unnecessary metadata such as geo information and camera details, and recommends stripping it.

Why it matters

GPS coordinates can be precise enough to point to a specific building on a map. One photo taken indoors can point to where you live, and the timestamps of several photos taken in the same place can show when you are home and when you are out. Take extra care when:

  • sending photos taken at home to strangers, as in marketplace listings;
  • posting photos of children, or taken near a school or academy;
  • passing files on as they are, through email attachments, cloud share links or a messenger's "send original" option;
  • attaching original photo files to a blog or forum post.

Every service handles the metadata of uploaded photos in its own way, and that can change. If it is hard to check which ones strip it for you, removing it yourself before posting is the surest option.

Check whether a photo has a location

Open a photo's info panel in your phone's photo app, and the place it was taken is often shown on a map. If you see a map, the file contains a location. On a computer, look for GPS fields in the file's properties or info window. You can also drop a photo into the location tab of Photo Fix to see its place, time and device.

Stop recording location in new photos

On iPhone, you can change each app's location access under Settings › Privacy & Security › Location Services. Set the Camera app to "Never" and new photos will not record a location. On Android, menu names vary by phone, but the camera app's settings often have a location tag or save-location option.

With location off, you lose the ability to browse photos by place in your photo app. If you want locations for your own albums, you can leave it on while shooting and remove it only when sending photos out.

Remove it from photos you already took

The location tool in Photo Fix offers two options.

  • Remove location only: clears the GPS coordinates and keeps the date and device. Useful when you sort photos by date.
  • Remove all metadata: also clears the date, device and software details, keeping only the orientation so the photo stays upright.

For JPG, PNG and WebP, it cuts out only the metadata sections without recompressing the image, so quality is unchanged. Formats it cannot edit directly, such as HEIC, are saved as a new JPG without the metadata. Afterwards it reads the result again to confirm the location is gone, and your photos are never uploaded.

Photos you shrink or convert in Photo Fix also come out without location or other metadata, because the browser redraws the image before saving it.

A quick check before posting

  1. Ask whether the photo shows your home or your child.
  2. Check whether a map appears in the photo's info panel.
  3. If it has a location, make a cleaned copy and post that copy.
  4. Also look at what is visible in the picture itself: the view from a window, a door number, a delivery label.

Remove location data now

Drop in a photo and it tells you right away whether it has a location, then lets you download a cleaned copy with one button.
